India is currently facing its worst water paradox in history. While the Jal Jeevan Mission has connected over 81% of rural homes to taps, the liquid flowing through them is often a cocktail of contaminants. As of early 2026, nearly 600 million Indians face extreme water stress, yet the quality of available water is an even bigger crisis. Data shows that 1 in 4 tap water samples fails microbiological safety tests nationwide. Consequently, millions of families consume “improved” water that remains dangerously untreated. Because over 21% of communicable diseases in India are water-related, the push for strengthening chlorination for safe water supply has become a literal battle for survival.
The Hidden Cost of India’s Water Woes
The economic and human toll of unsafe water is staggering. Every year, inadequate water safety leads to nearly 200,000 deaths across the country. Furthermore, waterborne illnesses like Typhoid and Cholera cause an annual loss of approximately 73 million working days. Therefore, the national workshop held at SPM NIWAS, Kolkata on February 20, 2026, addressed more than just plumbing. Experts focused on the urgent need to bridge the gap between “water access” and “water safety.”
A major milestone of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SPM NIWAS and Evidence Action. This partnership targets the deployment of in-line chlorination technology to disinfect water directly within village pipelines. The MoU supports capacity building to train local authorities on modern BIS:10500 safety standards. Additionally, the agreement emphasizes technical research to scale disinfection solutions across India’s diverse and difficult terrains.
Making ‘Safe Water at the Tap’ a Reality
Shri Priyatu Mandal, Head of SPM NIWAS, reminded officials that tap connections are only the first step. He stated that safe water must move from a government aspiration to a daily reality for every citizen. Because re-contamination in aging pipes is common, maintaining a residual chlorine level of 0.2 mg/L is critical. This chemical shield ensures that water remains sterile from the treatment plant to the consumer’s glass.
Finally, Shri Ankur Garg of EAII Advisors highlighted that India cannot afford “one-size-fits-all” solutions. He advocated for cost-effective, scalable technologies that handle the unique challenges of rural infrastructure. The workshop concluded with a firm commitment to preventive governance and community engagement. By prioritizing strengthening chlorination for safe water supply, India aims to transform its water networks from mere conduits of liquid into reliable pillars of public health.
