Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu launched the transformative Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana and Green Adoption Scheme in Hamirpur today, marking a significant stride toward environmental conservation and community-driven forest management in Himachal Pradesh.
Addressing a gathering, Sukhu emphasized that these initiatives aim to expand the state’s green cover by planting fruit-bearing trees on barren and degraded forest lands while generating employment and income for local communities. “By involving Mahila Mandals, Yuvak Mandals, and self-help groups, we are fostering grassroots participation in preserving our natural heritage,” he declared, highlighting the schemes’ dual focus on ecological and economic benefits.
During the event, Sukhu handed over certificates to two Mahila Mandals from Nadaun—Amlehad and Bhawdan, tasked with planting and maintaining trees on two hectares of forest land for a period of five years. This step, he noted, empowers local women to lead conservation efforts while ensuring sustainable forest management. Transitioning to corporate involvement, the Chief Minister launched the Green Adoption Scheme, which encourages private enterprises and non-governmental organizations to adopt barren forest lands for afforestation as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR).
In its initial phase, Ambuja Company will undertake plantation on 25 hectares, while Adani Foundation and UltraTech will each adopt 10 hectares. Sukhu presented certificates to these organizations, commending their commitment to environmental protection. “This initiative not only restores our forests but also aligns corporate goals with ecological responsibility,” he stated.
Furthermore, Sukhu inspected the passing-out parade of newly appointed Van Mitras, engaging with them to underscore their pivotal role in forest conservation. He acknowledged the Forest Department’s chronic shortage of field staff, which has hindered adequate forest protection. To address this, the government appointed Van Mitras on merit, with a notable number of young women securing these roles.
“These Van Mitras are the true guardians of our forests,” Sukhu affirmed, assuring them that future policies would safeguard their careers. He also highlighted the state’s commitment to women’s empowerment, noting a 30% reservation for women in police recruitment and the appointment of women in key administrative roles in Lahaul-Spiti, including the Deputy Commissioner.
Transitioning to the broader vision, Sukhu described Himachal Pradesh as a beacon of faith, culture, and natural abundance, with its forests playing a critical role in environmental conservation, tourism, and the economy.
“Since assuming office, our government has worked tirelessly to make Himachal a Green State,” he said, citing the Forest Department’s proactive initiatives. Among these, the Van Mitra Yojana stands out as a flagship program, creating jobs for youth, delivering departmental benefits to rural communities, and raising awareness about forest conservation. Sukhu urged Van Mitras to extend their role beyond protection, encouraging them to educate rural communities, prevent illegal logging, stay vigilant against forest fires, and actively participate in plantation drives.
In a heartfelt appeal, the Chief Minister reminded Van Mitras that their oath represents a lifelong commitment to forest conservation. “This is not just a formality but a pledge of dedication and responsibility,” he said, expressing confidence that their efforts would enrich Himachal’s green heritage. Additionally, Sukhu announced the launch of three new wellness centers under Hamirpur’s Municipal Corporation, released a souvenir titled “Samvaad” dedicated to Van Mitras, and unveiled a book titled “The Mountainous Wilderness of Spiti.” He also introduced a mobile application to streamline Van Mitras’ attendance tracking, enhancing operational efficiency.
In recognition of exemplary service, Sukhu honored Palampur Block Officer Rakesh Kumar and Chamba Conservator Abhilash Damodar, along with their teams, for their outstanding contributions to forest conservation. Additional Chief Secretary (Forests) K.K. Pant welcomed the Chief Minister, outlining the department’s initiatives, while PCCF (HoFF) Sameer Rastogi provided insights into the Van Mitras’ training program.
The event was attended by dignitaries, including MLA Captain Ranjit Singh Rana, Chief Minister’s Political Advisor Sunil Sharma, and other prominent leaders, underscoring the community’s support for these green initiatives. As Himachal Pradesh advances toward becoming a Green State, Sukhu’s call for collective action through the Van Mitra Yojana and corporate partnerships sets a promising path for sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
