India, on May 7, 2025, launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan to retaliate for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Several people have been feared killed in the massive strikes, media reports said.
The Indian military operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
This came after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists, an act India attributed to Pakistan-backed groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. The operation involved precision strikes by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, hitting nine sites, including key terror hubs in Bahawalpur and Muridke.
The strikes, executed at 1:44 AM, used advanced weaponry like SCALP missiles and loitering munitions, ensuring no Pakistani military facilities were targeted to avoid escalation. India’s Defence Ministry emphasized the operation’s measured approach, aiming to dismantle terror networks while exercising restraint.
Pakistan reported civilian casualties, claiming eight deaths, and labeled the strikes an “act of war,” vowing retaliation. Tensions escalated as Pakistan closed Lahore and Sialkot airports, and both nations exchanged border fire. The operation drew international attention, with the U.S. urging de-escalation while supporting India’s anti-terror stance.
Named “Sindoor” to symbolize both the cultural significance of vermillion and India’s warrior resolve, the operation underscored India’s firm policy against cross-border terrorism amidst heightened India-Pakistan friction.
