How digging a tubewell flooded an Indian desert village

In a truly extraordinary turn of events in North India, a farmer’s routine task of digging a tubewell took a dramatic and unexpected twist. Unbeknownst to him, a colossal surge of water, a staggering 800 feet below, erupted from the ground, a sight rarely witnessed in the region.

For this Indian farmer from the state of Rajasthan, what started as a routine task of digging a tubewell turned into a harrowing experience. Far beyond his expectations, a significant stream of water started brushing out from where the tube well was being dug, turning his task into a nightmare.

The pressure of the water and volume was so much so that the surroundings turned into a lake.

The incident occurred at Suthar Mandi, Mahendragarh, in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan. This desert land, known for its water scarcity, was the last place one would expect such a water gush. Rajasthan, a state often grappling with water shortages, was left in awe by this unexpected turn of events.

Vikram Singh, the farmer, hired a company to install the tubewell. When the machine reached 800 feet, water began to gush out. ‘I couldn’t believe my eyes,’ Singh recalls. It was like a miracle in the desert.’

The volume increased rapidly, engulfing the digging machine. The water continued to flow for 48 hours, causing a stir among the local administration. The incident, which occurred on a Saturday morning, has left the entire community in disbelief and awe at the discovery of such a significant groundwater source in the desert. This discovery will undoubtedly transform their lives.
