Washington, D.C. — In a bold move, the United States has announced extensive sanctions against Russia’s energy sector. More than 200 entities and individuals are now targeted, along with over 180 vessels designated as blocked property.
These actions aim to cut off crucial revenues from Russia’s energy resources. This is part of an ongoing effort to undermine President Vladimir Putin’s capacity to fund the war against Ukraine.
The Department of State led the initiative, sanctioning nearly 80 entities and individuals directly involved in the energy industry. This includes companies producing and exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) and those working to expand Russia’s oil production capacity.
Firms involved in the Arctic LNG 2 project, already under previous U.S. sanctions, are also on the list. Furthermore, senior officials at the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and various entities in Russia’s metals and mining sector face new restrictions.
Meanwhile, the Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions targeting over 150 entities and individuals. These include major oil producers like Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas. Russian insurance companies associated with shadow fleet operations have also been added to the block list.
The Treasury has formally designated Russia’s energy sector, tightening its ability to generate revenue. A new measure now bans U.S. crude oil extraction and production services, effectively cutting off critical support for Russia’s petroleum operations.
The United Kingdom is joining the U.S. in this coordinated effort. They aim to present a united front alongside G7 nations and other allies. This collaboration seeks to restrict resources vital to Russia’s military while bolstering Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty.
A senior administration official stated, “These sweeping sanctions reflect our commitment to using every tool at our disposal to constrain Russia’s ability to wage its illegal war against Ukraine.” The message is clear: aggression will not go unanswered.
These sanctions mark the latest step in a series of actions designed to isolate Russia economically and diplomatically. With today’s announcement, the U.S. and its allies reinforce their commitment to supporting Ukraine as it resists Russian aggression.
