The State Department has issued a travel advisory for Vanuatu at Level 3.
The recent earthquake caused considerable infrastructure damage, so the United States Department of State has increased its travel advisory for Vanuatu to Level 3.
This advisory indicates that travelers should exercise caution and reconsider their plans to visit the country. The prior advice, given on July 24, 2023, has been replaced by the update released on December 20, 2024.
As a result of the earthquake that occurred on December 17, 2024, there has been extensive disruption over the entirety of Vanuatu, with many structures suffering catastrophic damage.
Curfews have been implemented in certain regions, and fewer leave options are available. Due to the considerable damage to the local infrastructure, the United States government is likewise limited in providing immediate and extensive emergency help to its nationals in the region.
Travelers are strongly advised to have backup plans that do not rely solely on assistance from the United States government.
Citizens of the United States are strongly encouraged to take responsibility for their safety and reevaluate their plans to visit Vanuatu unless necessary.
“Travelers should ensure they have appropriate supplies of basics such as food, water, and medication and have their travel papers readily available,” a US Department spokesperson said, adding that travelers should also check any updates provided by various local authorities.
“It is strongly recommended that those presently in Vanuatu or visiting the country have backup evacuation plans that do not rely on assistance from the United States government,” the Spokesperson said.
The State Department strongly recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program allows travelers to receive emergency notifications and makes it easier for the Department to locate and assist them in a disaster.
The Department’s official website has further recommendations, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updates about health-related travel. Travelers should also review the Country Security Report and the Traveler’s Checklist to learn how to prepare for unexpected events.
Citizens of the United States can stay informed and empowered by following the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter or by visiting the country information page for Vanuatu to stay updated on the country’s latest developments.
