Germany’s Green Party is pressing Chancellor Friedrich Merz to spearhead a European initiative for peace in Gaza as a looming hunger crisis threatens. “The German government must shift from commentary to action,” said co-leader Franziska Brantner in a July 2025 dpa interview. She stressed the need for a political process to secure Israel’s existence and ensure Palestinian dignity through statehood.
Brantner emphasized that a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages are immediate priorities. She argued that only the Palestinian Authority can realistically drive this process. “Hamas’s capitulation would accelerate Palestine’s recognition,” she added. The Green Party believes Europe must take a proactive role, rather than leaving the issue to U.S. leadership.
These steps aim to curb actions exacerbating the conflict. The party believes suspending trade benefits will push Israel toward compliance. Such measures align with calls for increased access to humanitarian aid. The crisis demands bold action to alleviate suffering and promote dialogue.
Merz’s coordination with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 26, 2025, signals progress. The leaders described Gaza’s situation as “appalling” and urged Israel to lift aid restrictions.
The worsening hunger crisis in Gaza requires immediate international action. Brantner criticized leaving solutions to U.S. President Donald Trump alone. “Europe must step up,” she urged, highlighting the need for a unified strategy.
Macron, Starmer, and Merz agreed on the importance of a ceasefire and the need for unrestricted aid delivery. “Gaza’s people need food and safety now,” Starmer noted in a statement. The trio’s talks reflect a commitment to coordinated efforts.
The Green Party’s push emphasizes Europe’s responsibility to lead. By fostering dialogue and ensuring aid, the initiative seeks to stabilize the region. Merz’s next steps will be pivotal in shaping this response.
