Chandigarh, June 6, 2025 – Union Power Minister Manohar Lal endorsed Haryana Energy Minister Anil Vij’s proposal to establish solar houses in villages to ensure daytime electricity for farmers during the Regional Power Ministers’ Conference (Northern Region) in Chandigarh. Vij emphasized Haryana’s ongoing efforts to promote solar energy for self-reliance in electricity, announcing a pilot project for solar houses, with plans for statewide expansion if successful.

Addressing officials from Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, Vij highlighted the need for solar-powered houses to provide reliable daytime power for farmers’ irrigation and other essential needs. He noted that while 10 kW solar panels are currently installed in homes, dedicated solar houses are more practical for higher capacity demands.

Vij proposed a policy to regulate infrastructure, such as poles and substations, over fields and homes, advocating for underground cabling in sensitive areas and safety standards to ensure uninterrupted power during disasters. He also called for a national cybersecurity policy to safeguard the power sector, citing recent cyberattacks on UHBVN and DHBVN portals during the May 2025 Pakistan conflict. Measures like Web Application Firewalls and a disaster recovery center are being implemented.

Haryana’s installed power capacity stands at 16,130.07 MW, with 37.31% of the capacity coming from renewables. Plans are underway to reach 22,222 MW by 2031-32, including the commissioning of an 800 MW unit in Yamunanagar by February 2029, as well as expansion units in Hisar and Panipat. Transmission infrastructure projects worth Rs 58,546.41 million, including 41 new substations and 3,570.721 km of lines, are set for completion by 2029-30.

Vij urged approval for a 600 MWh Battery Energy Storage System, Rs 3,179.47 crore under the Revised Distribution Sector Scheme for Sonepat and Jhajjar, and Rs 1,809.35 crore in interest-free loans for transmission infrastructure. He also sought Rs 366 crore for upgrading 26 transmission lines with high-temperature, low-sag conductors.

Haryana is committed to supporting national initiatives, including the Green Energy Corridor, nuclear power plants, smart metering, electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and the One Nation-One Grid initiative. Union Power Ministry Secretary Pankaj Agarwal attended the conference, along with Haryana’s Additional Chief Secretary AK Singh, Energy Ministers from northern states, and senior officials, including the Managing Directors of UHBVN, DHBVN, and Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd.
