In a bold move to revolutionize sports infrastructure in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal jointly laid the foundation stone for transforming Burlton Park into an ultra-modern Sports Hub on Wednesday. The ambitious project, valued at ₹78 crore, aligns with the Smart City Mission and promises to elevate Jalandhar’s stature as India’s sports capital.
Both leaders hailed the occasion as historic, asserting that the new facilities will significantly boost the city’s sporting legacy. The revamped Burlton Park will house a state-of-the-art cricket ground, complemented by diverse modern amenities.
Additionally, the project includes two multi-purpose stadiums: one for handball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and wrestling, and another for weightlifting, judo, and kabaddi. Separate stadiums for football and hockey are also in the pipeline, alongside a dedicated yoga shed, a skating rink, cycling and jogging tracks, and upgraded lawn tennis courts.
Transitioning to spectator and public convenience, the Sports Hub will offer indoor seating for 500 and outdoor seating for 1,000. Furthermore, the complex will feature a cafeteria, shopping complex with vending zones, a reliable electricity and water supply, and essential infrastructure, including transformers and diesel generators (DG sets) for uninterrupted power. The park will also boast three main entry gates, traffic lights for smooth flow, renovated roads with aesthetic landscaping, and parking for over 200 four-wheelers and 150 two-wheelers.
Highlighting Jalandhar’s rich sporting heritage, Mann and Kejriwal noted that the city gained global recognition through institutions such as Burlton Park, Surjit Hockey Stadium, and the Sports College.
They stated that footballs, rugby balls, and equipment manufactured in Jalandhar are used in prestigious events such as the FIFA World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. At the same time, cricketers worldwide rely on bats made in Jalandhar. Punjab’s sporting tradition, they added, originated and thrived in this region. The Punjab Government, they affirmed, remains fully committed to enhancing Jalandhar’s sports prominence, concluding with a promise to complete and dedicate the project to the public within the following year.
