Germans favor giving Syrian refugees time before returning home

A significant majority of people in Germany believe that Syrian refugees ought to be permitted to stay in the country until their home nation is peaceful and stable enough for them to return, according to a recent poll.

The poll conducted for German public broadcaster ZDF and released on Friday indicated that 64% of participants support allowing Syrian refugees to evaluate the situation in the Middle Eastern nation following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Approximately 975,000 Syrians are residing in Germany, based on statistics from the Interior Ministry, with the majority having arrived since 2015 due to the civil war that began in 2011.

In light of the rebel coalition led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group ousting al-Assad nearly two weeks ago, some conservative German leaders have urged for the swift return of Syrian refugees to their country.

Moreover, immigration officials have suspended making decisions on asylum claims from Syrians due to the evolving circumstances.

Nevertheless, the survey indicates that merely 6% of German residents believe that all Syrian refugees should leave immediately, while 27% contend that unemployed Syrians should do so.

The research also highlighted that only 27% of participants expect Syria to achieve stability and peace following the fall of al-Assad.
